5 Questions You Should Ask Yourself When Choosing a Camera Backpack
Don’t underestimate the importance of choosing the right camera backpack or camera bag. The wrong camera backpack will slow you down every time you shoot. The right one will make your work much easier. And your back will thank you too. It’s the place where your gear will spend most of its time — right after your hands. The right bag protects your equipment, speeds up your workflow and saves your nerves.
We’ll guide you through the selection process so you don’t have to return your backpack and waste time.
At the beginning, it’s important to ask yourself 5 key questions:
-
How much gear do you need to carry?
This is the absolute foundation. A photojournalist with one camera body and two lenses who mainly needs fast access to gear requires a different backpack than a landscape photographer carrying two bodies, several lenses, a drone, a tripod and additional accessories for sunrise shoots. Very simply, gear setups can be divided into:
-
small setup – a smaller camera bag or compact camera backpack,
-
medium setup – a versatile camera backpack with flexible organization or a removable insert,
-
large setup – a large camera backpack with multiple storage compartments or a combination of backpack and hard case.
Think about future expansion too. Gear tends to grow. We know that from our own experience. 😇

Will you take the backpack off, or work “on the move”?
The second key question is about your workflow. If you often take your backpack off and unpack your gear, a classic camera backpack with full access to the main compartment is a good choice.
If you need quick access without taking the backpack off, you’ll appreciate backpacks with side access or a sling bag.
A very practical solution is often a camera backpack with a removable insert that you can carry over your shoulder after putting the backpack down, keeping only the essentials with you while shooting. This setup is especially useful for wedding photographers or corporate event photographers who don’t want to carry the whole backpack on their back all day. A smaller bag or removable insert is enough for the gear they need close at hand but are not currently using.

Where will you most often take your backpack with gear?
Will you shoot in the city center or out in the woods? Snowy mountains or Egyptian deserts? Not every backpack is designed for such different conditions, so it’s important to think about where you’ll spend most of your time. And if you travel to Australia once a year, we recommend using a rental service instead.
But if you love adrenaline, beautiful scenery and sleeping under a million stars, definitely choose a highly durable backpack that can handle it all with you.
-
Do you travel for photography often?
This is more about the style and frequency of travel. You need to decide whether you mainly travel by train and plane — in that case, you should look for camera backpacks suitable as carry-on luggage. At the same time, besides your gear, it also needs to fit everything else from your passport and wallet to snacks, spare socks and a hoodie.
-
Will your backpack need a helper?
Generally speaking, the bigger the job, the more gear you need. So for some projects, you may need additional storage. There are bags that can be attached to a backpack to increase the total capacity. Or it may already make more sense to get a hard case instead.
These are the five questions we ask our customers when helping them choose. It’s a basic checklist for selection. If you can answer all of them honestly and objectively, you’ll have everything you need to start filtering products.
